When creating the performance "UNDERGROUND" in 2008, Radu Poklitaru took as his starting point Jean-Paul Sartre’s phrase “Hell is other people”, which became the source not only of the idea but also of the depth of feeling that underlies this ballet. But this ballet is not about the biblical hell. It is a story about people driven into the Underground by war. In this enclosed space, where they are forced to coexist, their emotions reach extraordinary peaks: love intersects with hatred, joy mingles with despair. There, every moment leaves open the question of whether they will ever be able to return to the surface?! And that is precisely why their “now” is so much more important than their “later”.

Radu Poklitaru

While creating the performance "Underground" to the music of the famous Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, I was inspired by the words of Jean-Paul Sartre "Hell is the others". However, this is not a ballet about the Biblical hell. This is a story of the people, driven into the underground by the war. Forced to stay together in the closed space of the Underground, they raise the amplitude of their emotions to peak values - love - hate, joy - despair. Nobody knows whether they are to see the light of the day ever again. That is why their "now" is more important that their "afterwards"
