The ballet “Alice Through the Looking-Glass” is an original reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale through the lens of contemporary choreography. Choreographer Kateryna Kurman brings to her work a unique vision of the characters’ inner world through intricate dance forms.

The creative team of the ballet “Alice Through the Looking-Glass”: Kateryna Kurman, choreographer of the Kyiv Modern Ballet Academic Theatre, author of the libretto, choreography and staging of the ballet. Ivan Harkusha (John Hope) – Ukrainian composer, author of the ballet’s electronic music. Dmytro Kuriata – costume designer. Danylo Vasylenko – set designer.

At the heart of the plot of the ballet “Alice Through the Looking-Glass” – are Alice’s captivating adventures, full of mystery and anxiety, in the whimsical world of adolescent dreams. It is a story in which reality crumbles before one’s eyes, giving way to the enigmatic world beyond the looking-glass – a kind of labyrinth where the usual laws lose their force and fantasies come to life, taking on new meaning. Here, in the world of the subconscious, the conscious, the unconscious and the superconscious perform a fanciful dance as if on a “giant chessboard,” where each successive step is a game of reason, emotion and inner conflict. Drawn into the whirl of this enigmatic world, Alice with every step moves further and further from reality, plunging into the most secret yet alluring labyrinths of her own subconscious. Where will this journey lead her? What hidden truths will she uncover along the way? Who is she really – a girl who has fled from harsh reality, or someone more?

This contemporary ballet will make you reflect on the depth of the human soul, its capacity for transformation and resilience in a world that is constantly changing. Adapting to new conditions, moving forward through obstacles – these are the themes that envelop the story of “Alice Through the Looking-Glass.”

The second performance of the ballet is on 26 January 2025, at the International Centre of Culture and Arts. Tickets HERE
