Kyiv Modern Ballet is preparing the premiere of the ballet La Traviata to music by G. Verdi on 16 and 17 October.
The Academic Theatre «Kyiv Modern Ballet», with the financial support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and the programme for providing financial assistance on a repayable interest-free basis, presents a new project — the two-act ballet «La Traviata» to the music of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera. The premiere for audiences will take place on 16 and 17 October 2025 on the stage of the ICAC. Ticket sales are already open.
Production team:
• Radu Poklitaru — chief ballet master of the Academic Theatre «Kyiv Modern Ballet», Honoured Artist of Ukraine — libretto, choreography, staging;
• Olha Nikitina — author of the video projection;
• Dmytro Kuriata — costume designer.
What the production is about
«La Traviata» in Radu Poklitaru’s staging is a story about love, self-sacrifice and the searing power of self-denial. It is a choreographic drama in which tenderness and passion collide with the judgement of society, and self-sacrifice becomes a sign of eternal devotion.
Choreography, costumes and video projections merge into a single artistic space in order to lay bare the drama of feelings. Every movement turns into a confession, every mise-en-scène into a trial, every composition into a step toward catharsis. This is not a reconstruction of the classics but a new, deeply contemporary reading, in which familiar images appear sharply, unexpectedly and exceptionally personally.
«My Violetta, like her operatic Precursor, is an extract of the collective image of Woman, pulsating with genuine passion, ready to bring her very self to the altar of love. This ballet is a solo confession of the heroine, sounding to the accompaniment of the menacingly enraptured rumble of male society. Alone in a masculine sea, my Violetta confidently and unwaveringly steers the ship of her existence toward physical destruction and the immortal flight of eternal love», — Radu Poklitaru.
The ballet promises to become one of the most powerful theatrical events of the season, opening to audiences an abyss of emotions and new facets of a familiar story.
The official presentation of the ballet for the media is on 23 September.
The «La Traviata» project is being implemented as part of the initiative «20 Seasons of Sustainability and Innovation» with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation under the competitive programme «Culture During the War. Lot 1. Creation of Cultural Product and Content» and the budget of the city of Kyiv under the programme for providing financial assistance on a repayable interest-free basis.
