In just a week, on January 21, Kyiv will host the premiere of a dystopian ballet based on the novel “1984” by British writer George Orwell.
The one-act ballet “1984.Another”, staged by “Kyiv Modern Ballet” academic theatre artists Illia Miroshnichenko and Kateryna Kuznetsova, will be shown on the stage of the Kyiv Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.
The production, which — by the choreographers’ design — gives its own answer to the questions Orwell posed in his famous novel, involves nine “Kyiv Modern Ballet” artists.
The main antagonist of “1984.Another”, the choreographers say, will be light. In addition, audiences can expect new movement solutions combining elements of body percussion, physical theatre and contemporary choreography. The stage design is accompanied by unusual sets, created using 300 metres of chains, 45 sq. m of metal mesh and paper.
The dystopian ballet is set to the music of the Icelandic cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir — author of the soundtrack to the series “Chernobyl”, who became the sensation of this year’s Golden Globes by winning the award for original music for the film “Joker” — and the German composer-pianist Hauschka, a Golden Globe nominee for the music to the film “Lion” and author of the music for the series “Patrick Melrose”.
