To music by the composer of “Joker”. Kyiv to show a dystopian ballet based on Orwell’s “1984”
In Kyiv, on the stage of the Kyiv Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre for Children and Youth (2 Mezhyhirska St), a dystopian ballet based on the novel “1984” by British writer George Orwell will be shown.
“1984.Another” is a dystopian ballet built on a completely new reading of the well-known story — different characters, a fresh understanding of the global social issues that concern society today. The one-act ballet was staged by the artists of the “Kyiv Modern Ballet” academic theatre, Illia Miroshnichenko and Kateryna Kuznetsova.
The choreography of the dystopian ballet was created to the music of two contemporary composers — the Icelandic cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir, known for her soundtracks to the films “Joker”, “Mary Magdalene”, “Sicario 2”, and the German pianist and composer Hauschka, nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for the music to the film “Lion”.
The production, which involves nine “Kyiv Modern Ballet” artists, will be accompanied by the video project “From the Inside”, in which the creators tell how the ballet was made — from idea to premiere.
“People are ghosts, people are empty shells leading their aimless existence on the edge of reality and the dictator’s imposed will. Their life is a self-sacrificing deception in which they find their salvation, their faith, their truth. But what will happen to them if the deception is suddenly revealed? Whose side will they choose? In his novel ‘1984’ George Orwell gave his answer. And our dystopian ballet is ready to give its own,” say Illia Miroshnichenko and Kateryna Kuznetsova about the upcoming production.
The premiere of the ballet “1984.Another” will take place on January 21, 2020.
