Yana Barinova: Kyiv to host the premiere of the ballet “The Queen of Spades” staged by Radu Poklitaru

Kyiv presented a new project of the “Kyiv Modern Ballet” Academic Theatre — the two-act ballet “The Queen of Spades” to music by P. I. Tchaikovsky. This was announced by the director of the Department of Culture of the KCSA, Yana Barinova.

A new project by the «Kyiv Modern Ballet» Academic Theatre was presented in Kyiv – the two-act ballet «The Queen of Spades» set to the music of P. I. Tchaikovsky. This was announced by Yana Barinova, Director of the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration.

According to her, the project is being implemented with the financial support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration. The premiere will take place on the stage of the International Centre of Culture and Arts, and it will be possible to watch it both online link and offline.

«The ballet «The Queen of Spades» is precisely the project in which classical dramaturgy and music meet contemporary ballet in its finest embodiment by the «Kyiv Modern Ballet» theatre. For the staging of the production, the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration allocated UAH 315,000 following the results of an artistic competition. This is exactly the case when the city funds a cultural event whose significance reaches far beyond the cultural life of Kyiv», – says Yana Barinova.

According to the project’s ballet master Radu Poklitaru, «The Queen of Spades», a world-renowned example of literary and musical art, will be reimagined through the prism of the aesthetics of contemporary dance theatre using the latest technologies: modern lighting, a surround sound system and virtual objects that will form a continuum of «augmented reality» and «hybrid reality».

«The two acts will differ both in their eras and in their style. These will be two absolutely different worlds into which the audience will be immersed. In character, in the stylisation of the costume. Of course, we have references to historical eras, but these are not quotations. It is a completely reworked and stylised costume: its silhouette, texture, decoration. That is, people will feel the spirit of the era, but no one will have any sense that this is a quotation or a museum exhibit», – noted costume designer Dmytro Kuryata.

He added that the ballet «The Queen of Spades» is an exceptional opportunity to take a new look at the world and at the same time to enjoy a dramatic and emotional theatrical product.
