A one-act ballet “DiscrimiNATION” presented in Kyiv: where and when to see it
With the financial support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, on October 21 the “Kyiv Modern Ballet” Academic Theatre presents a new project — the one-act ballet “DiscrimiNATION” to music by George Handel and Valentin Silvestrov. The performance will take place at the ICCA October Palace, UNN reports.
On 21 October, with the financial support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, the Academic Theatre “Kyiv Modern Ballet” presents a new project — a one-act ballet “DiscrimiNATION” set to the music of George Frideric Handel and Valentyn Sylvestrov. The performance will take place on the stage of the International Center of Culture and Arts (the October Palace), UNN reports.

The production team of the ballet “DiscrimiNATION”: Radu Poklitaru, chief ballet master of the Academic Theatre “Kyiv Modern Ballet”, Honored Art Worker of Ukraine — libretto, choreography, staging. Oleksandr Bilozub, People’s Artist of Ukraine — set designer. Dmytro Kuriata — costume designer.
The ballet “DiscrimiNATION” is a choreographic fantasy that will consist of a series of novella-parables which, at first glance, are in no way connected to one another and which, in a nonlinear and maximally generalized manner, will tell of various kinds of discrimination.
United by the continuous movements of choreography and of inner life, by the emotions and discrepancies of human society, in which the entire Universe and all of Humanity are hidden like a drop of water. Bound together by ideas that will champion the values of the democratic, civilized world. They will focus attention on the issues surrounding the phenomena of discrimination and tolerance, of contempt and mutual understanding, of a person’s awareness of their own identity, of the formation of a modern community of people that we call a nation.

“At first glance, the exploration of such a complex concept as discrimination may seem a non-obvious choice for the main theme of a large dance performance. Yet at the root of all manifestations of discrimination lies the conscious or unconscious desire to make another person’s life unbearable; it is the quintessence of emotional suppression, of the humiliation of the human personality. Dance, in turn, is above all emotional by its very nature. Therefore, everything vividly emotional in our lives, even if of a negative cast, is a wonderful object for study and reflection through the creation of a choreographic-directorial text — the very body of a ballet performance”, — Radu POKLITARU on the ideas of the new ballet.
“In the project „DiscrimiNATION“ one can trace an appeal to the theme of industrialization as a new sign-and-semantic system and to the theme of the latest forms of urban communication. According to the concept of costume designer Dmytro KURIATA, the clothing will reflect the cosmopolitanism and urbanization of the modern world in a palette of costumes resembling the colors of a big city’s kaleidoscope — the color of asphalt, concrete and brick.
“In the forms and silhouettes of the costumes, which are allusions to the architectural forms of cities, the so-called metaphor of the outer shell imprisoning a living soul will be reflected. The structure and geometry of urban buildings is the basis of the rhythmic-metric construction of the costume”, — notes Dmytro KURIATA.
